Author of "You Are Not a Stranger Here" (for which he was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction in 2002 and the Pulitzer Prize in 2003) and "Imagine Me Gone" (for which he was on the longlist for the National Book Award in 2016, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2017)
Won the New York Magazine Writer-of-the-Year Award in 2002
Won the PEN/Malamud Award for accomplishment in the short-story form
