Author of "The Wanderers" (for which he won the African Arts magazine First Prize for Best African novel in 1968 - 1969 and nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1969), "Down Second Avenue" and "In Corner B"
Awarded the Order of the Palm by the French Government in 1984
Awarded the Order of the Southern Cross by President Nelson Mandela in 1998
Spent many years in exile teaching around the world because of the apartheid government
