American children's book author, playwright, film historian and author
Author of over 100 works including "Seven Old Maids" (for which he won the Avery Hopwood Prize in Short Story Fiction in 1955), "Pocohontas in London" (for which he won the Young Critic's Award from the Bologna International Children's Book Fair in 1969), "Humphrey's Bear" (for which he won the Ohioana Book Award and the Redbone Award in 1987 and the Christopher Medal in 1988), "Dear Stinkpot: Letters from Louise Brooks" and "Hedy and Her Amazing Invention"
Was the personal secretary to author Isak Dineson
Many famous illustrators worked on his books including Edward Gorey, Mercer Mayer, Norman Rockwell and Maurice Sendak
