Author of "Battleground" (for which he won an Academy Award for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay in 1949 and was based on his war journals while a member of the 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division)
Worked with George Seaton on the scripts for the Marx Brothers' "A Night at the Opera" and "The Day at the Races"
Was nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay for "Go For Broke" in 1951
