Today's microblog celebrates the creation of NASA! On this date in 1958, the US Congress passed legislation establishing the National Aeronautics & Space Administration. A direct result of the fears of the Cold War and the launch of Sputnik 1, the US government focused on catching and passing the Soviets in the "Space Race". Launching the Mercury program and continuing through Gemini, Apollo, Space Shuttles and now the International Space Station, NASA has continued to seek out new understanding of our universe-from the moon to Mars and beyond! We honor all the men and women who have worked to make us smarter with books in our collection on space!
